A Patient’s Journey: From Existing to Living
When Your Back Holds You Back
We’ve all been there: running, lifting, feeling strong and invincible. Until one day, our back gives out. The pain hits hard. Bending feels impossible, lifting hurts, and suddenly everything we loved is out of reach.
Back pain is debilitating. For some, it can even feel like life comes to a halt. The constant pain, stiffness, and sleepless nights take a toll not only on the body but also on the mind. Where is help?
Role of Physiotherapy in Treating Low Back Pain
Accurate Diagnosis
Every back pain is different, your recovery should be too. At In Touch Physio, we begin with a thorough assessment to find out what is causing your pain. This is important because it helps tailor the treatment plan for you. When we identify any ‘red flags’ that require medical attention, we will refer you to the right care promptly.
Effective Treatment
Manual therapy, such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, dry needling, relieves pain. Rehab exercise gets your body to move safely and confidently again. No more avoiding movement and missing out on life!
Long-Term Care
Getting rid of pain is only the beginning. The real goal is helping you stay active without fear, be it powerlifting, soccer, or skiing. Our physiotherapists will guide you through strength and conditioning, posture retraining, and injury prevention strategies to keep your body resilient for the long run, literally.
A Patient's Journey- Ben’s Story
The Challenge
Ben, a 41-year-old father of three, came to me after years of back pain. He had a discectomy (disc removal) between L5 and S1, several nerve injections, and countless pain-killers. His last resort was a spinal fusion surgery.
Everyday life had come to a complete stop. He couldn’t lift his youngest child or help around the house. Lying flat was the only position that didn’t cause pain. Medication, restless nights, and frustration became his new normal. “I just wanted it all to stop,” Ben said. After the initial assessment, this was what we did:
Phase 1: Pain Reduction
- Manual therapy for pain relief
- Gentle stretching and light cycling to remove fear around movement
Phase 2: Restore Movement
- Daily cardio and back relaxation techniques
- Recognizing unhelpful strategies and re-train daily movements
Phase 3: Strengthening and Prevention
- Functional strengthening for hobbies: boxing, weight training
- Mindfulness to build mental resilience
The Outcome
Over several months, Ben transformed both physically and mentally. He is completely off medication, back to working full-time, exercising, and most importantly, enjoying life with his young family.
“I was just existing, not living”, he says. “But now, I’m back to boxing, lifting, and running around with my kids. Finding the right physio and learning to move confidently changed everything.”
